Transmembrane transport; structural analysis of membrane transporters
(Prof. emeritus Dr. Fritz K. Winkler)
Our research focus is the structural biology of membrane proteins, in particular the structure and function of membrane located ion transporters. Our laboratory is part of the laboratory of Biomolecular Research in the Biology and Chemistry Department at the Paul Scherrer Institut, PSI, in Villigen, Switzerland. PSI is part of the ETH Bereich.
Our research program addresses a number of biological themes related to transmembrane transport. We aim to provide detailed structural insights into the molecular interactions and mechanisms that are essential for the biological function of membrane proteins and of macromolecular protein complexes. For more information, please consult the individual research projects.
Our laboratory is well equipped for molecular biology and protein purification work and operates a technology platform with robotic equipment for the efficient cloning and expression/solubility screening of protein constructs (see (http://sb.web.psi.ch/HTP/HTP.html).
To complement our crystallographic studies, we use a large number of biophysical methods which allow us to also functionally characterize the proteins under investigation.
Location
We are located at the Paul Scherrer Institut in CH-5232 Villigen, Switzerland, about 35 km north-west of Zurich and 55 km east of Basle. You can reach us either by public transport or by car.
Contact
Please, contact either our secretary Monika Brunner or our staff scientist Xiao-Dan Li.
